The Burden of Seeing

6" x 6"

Mezzotint with À la Poupée Ink Application, 2025

I have a deep affinity for the range of values and painterly quality of mezzotint intaglio. I print in one layer, instead using a la poupée application to almost "paint" the colors onto the plate, using careful wiping to manipulate the color density and blend. It takes about an hour per print of the edition to apply the ink, and a very precise hand to keep the edition cohesive. The Idea for the piece is rooted in the weight I feel when witnessing our human destruction of creation. Often, I feel I am almost physically holding my eyes open. Paying attention to the path we are on is crucial if we wish to look to change and healing, but awareness can be heavy when observing something so broken.
